Fall 2009

Some of our Spring Prince of Wales Island Bears

Spring 2010

Hunt Description

The hunt will take place on Prince of Wales Island based out of my Hollis Cabin.

Your jet travel should be scheduled from your home to Seattle to Ketchikan via Alaska Airlines. Most hunters arrive in Ketchikan about 4 pm. Since the airport is on an Island across from Ketchikan it is usually about 5:30 pm before you get checked into a motel. There are several motels to choose from but most of my past hunters have stayed at the Best Western Landing.

The next morning you could fly over to Hollis on Prince of Wales via scheduled float plane service. That cost is about $130 including the extra baggage fees. If it is not flying weather or you would like to spend part of the day in Ketchikan there is daily ferry service to Hollis. That runs just over $40 and has a 3:30 pm departure.

If my schedule (around the previous hunt) allows me, I will meet you upon your arrival at the Ketchikan jet port. Otherwise I will meet you upon your arrival in Hollis. I will help you with all those arrangements.

I am a vendor and have all necessary licenses and tags on hand. Non-resident hunting license fees are $85 and the Black Bear tag is $225.

You will be guided by Registered Guide Johnnie Laird. Johnnie has lived and hunted on POW Island since 1980. He received his license as an assistant hunting guide in 1988 and obtained a US Coast Guard Master (25 tons) License in 1994. Muskeg Excursions went into the big game hunting business full time in 1995.

On the spring hunt we spend most of our time hunting the beaches and tidal flats. We access those hunting areas by small boats.  Occasionally we hunt the uplands using some of the many miles of logging roads that Prince of Wales has to offer. Some times we set up a beach style tent camp to keep from having to return from a more remote area to the Cabin. Some times we hunt out of the Hollis Cabin returning to the wood stove to dry out. The Cabin is small, rustic but makes a very comfortable hunting camp.

We usually get in some fishing and crabbing, as well.

You will be able to look over Bear during your 7 day hunt and be selective. Some Bear will be rubbed but there will be new Bear showing up from the higher den areas every day. Our success on these prime time hunts is very high. A B&C Bear is very possible on these spring hunt. You can expect to take a 61/2 to 71/2 foot Bear with a skull size of 19 to 21 inches. We have taken some over 21 inches in the past.
