Sitka
Blacktail
To be scheduled between August 16th
and the 26th
We have room for one
or two hunters on this hunt.
Hunt
Description
The hunt will take place on the Prince of
Wales Island based out of our Cabin in Hollis and a high mountain
backpack tent camp.
On Aug 14th to 18th your jet travel should be
scheduled from your home to Seattle to Ketchikan via Alaska Airlines.
Most hunters arrive in Ketchikan about 4 pm. To late to get over to the Island
(unless you want to charter a flight after your arrival). Since the airport is on an Island across from Ketchikan
it is usually about 5:30 pm before you get checked into a motel. There are several motels to choose from. The rates
should be from $125 to $175. I will help you with all your arrangements.
Depending on my schedule ..... I might be
able to meet you upon your arrival at the
Ketchikan jet port. If I am at the Cabin my wife Fran will meet you and
get you headed in the right direction.
The next day you have the choice to fly
over to Prince of Wales or wait until the ferry sails at 3:30 pm. Flying
is weather dependent any time of the year but the ferry usually runs.
There are two flying options. Charter an aircraft or take a scheduled
flight. Costs will vary and we can talk about that. The Ferry ticket
will be about $45 one way. These costs are up to you.
Your hunt will begin between Aug 16th and
the 20th and
continue to the 22nd till the 26th. You will be
guided by Registered Guide Johnnie Laird. Johnnie has lived and hunted
on POW Island since 1980. He received his license as an assistant
hunting guide in 1988 and obtained a US Coast Guard Master (25 tons)
License in 1994. Muskeg Excursions went into the big game hunting
business full time in 1995.
Your return reservations could be the
afternoons of the 23rd to the 27th or mornings of the 24th to the 28th.
Your airline reservations would need at least a 10 or 11 day
spread.
General Overview:
Muskeg Excursions works under a
Priority Use Permit on the Tongass National Forest, Craig and Misty
Fjords Ranger Districts.
We will schedule this for 7 days of
hunting. And can extend a few days if need be.
Being in very good physical condition for the
hunt is a must.
Physical as well as mental preparedness is
very important especially on this late season hunt. There
will be weather with out a doubt.
The Bucks will be just coming out of velvet.
This will be a spot and stalk style hunt. The Sitka
Balcktail are still in their summer hair and hanging in the high alpine. It
not uncommon to see large numbers of deer on this hunt and possible bachelor
groups.
We have hunted this area over the years
and are very familiar with it. A B&C quality Sitka is very possible. We
have taken some real nice Bucks on these high alpine hunts.
If there is time we can get in some
crabbing and fishing.
We will have a cook at the Cabin and do
eat well when we are there. At the tent camp we will be eating a freeze
dried menu.
Rate:
The rate is $5500 for a single
hunter. The rate for 2 hunters is $4000 each ... discounted because of
the 2 hunter x 1 guide type arrangement.
These rates a based on one Deer ...
additional Deer can be taken for a fee of $1500 charged upon success.
Extra Costs:
Good rainwear is a must and Gore-Tex lined
mountain hunting boots will be needed also.
Extra costs will be license and tags, non-resident hunting license fees are
$85, Sitka Blacktail tags are $150 each. I am a vendor and have all necessary licenses and tags on
hand.
